Traditionally, much of the training in the electronic security industry has taken the form of delivering what the trainer, manufacturer or distributor of a product though it necessary to teach you about the subject matter. In most cases, the subject matter was theoretical in its nature, partially as a result of the difficulties and costs associated with "hands on" practice being conducted in a classroom or workshop venue. It was left to the student, very often, to make sense of what information he/she had "caught" and to attempt to apply it to relavent and practical working situations.

Competency Based Training, in contrast, focuses on what the student or employee is expected to do in the workplace. This includes both knowledge about the task to be performed as well as the ability to apply that knowledge in a safe and practical sense in order to "competently" carry out the task.
